Coal will remain king-I: Thermal power will continue to contribute 74% of India's power needs even in 2040
Jan 05: The talk about the early demise of the thermal power sector should not be taken too seriously.
8Latest January 2018 projections from a renowned global research agency show no change in the overall contribution of the thermal power in India's electricity kitty until the year 2040
8Unlike in other countries, the newest projections show coal generation making up a massive 73% of the total power generated in 2040 in India, down only 1% from now.
8The share of gas-based power generation will shrink from 5% currently to a mere 3%
8Despite all the hype, the share of renewables will be up only 8% to 14% in India's total power generation by 2040
8These projections are backed with a huge amount of data and all power policy planners must look at the data carefully for a longer term perspective.
