Government agency does not see rise in gas-based power capacity-I: "Wrong way to go about it," say gas suppliers

8In what could appear as a big blow to the gas industry in India, a government agency seems to see no requirement for additional gas-based power capacity of 25,000 MW in the next 10 years. 8No fresh gas-based capacity has been considered, as there is limited availability of domestic gas, axiomatically assuming that LNG would be too expensive to drive up gas-based capacity in India. 8"What is implicit in this argument is that coal-based power capacity is being promoted as against far cleaner gas-based power," an industry executive told this website. "It does not take into consideration a host of factors, including a tax on carbon and lower gas prices, that could allow for a substitution of coal with gas, as is the trend in other parts of the world," he went on to say. 8"If the gas-based power sector stays where it is, it will severely limit India's capacity to transit into a cleaner economy," he said Click on Details for more Details
