Should GAIL get monopoly rights over the national gas grid 23 Aug 2010 03:22 AM
GAIL has of late gone on the offensive for becoming the sole agency for implementation and operation of the proposed nationwide gas grid. The gas operator's case is quite strong. The company has claimed complete ownership of the grid on grounds of sensitivity and project value, both in terms of cost and energy security. Further, it has argued that globally 38 out of 39 countries preferred single ownership of the gas network. What is more, the usual practice is to ensure public or state ownership, except USA which has a multiplayer system. Also, the argument goes, single ownership of gas grid would ensure uninterrupted and consistent supply of gas to the markets, along with operational cost savings for the economy. However, others disagree with GAIL's views, notably Reliance, Shell and BP. Their argument is that the 7,900 km. gas grid should not be restricted to one player. Rather, it should be left to market forces. The government conferred monopoly status on GAIL in its draft gas pipeline policy. But, continuing debate on the matter and vehement objections from the abovementioned private players has shaken the government's resolve and it is still undecided on the ownership pattern of the gas grid . How about you? Do you feel the national gas grid would be better off with a GAIL monopoly or do you think other players should also take part in the process? Vipin Gupta Dont Monopolise 25 Nov 2006 05:06 AM
GAIL is the only choice and right choice reeks of monopolism. If the same attitude would have been adopted for the telecom sector, we would still be in queue for getting land line connections and mobile connections from State owned companies. Babus holding on to chair and wanting to take on competions only would want to only let only GAIL work the pipelines
Rajesh Ambani Yes - GAIL is the only choice 28 Sep 2006 06:20 AM
GAIL has very good command over pipeline laying. If GAIL lays the pipeline and ONGC / RELIANCE get the gas from offshore and from domestic sources then the future of our country will be great. So GAIL is the only right Choice.
S M BADRUDDOJA IMPLEMETATION OF GAS GRID CAN BE DONE ONLY THROUGH GAIL INDIA 27 Sep 2006 10:57 PM
DEAR SIR I WOULDLIKE TO TELL YOU THAT GAIL IS ONLY COMPANY WHICH CAN IMPLEMENT THE GAS GRID.PRIVATE PLAYERS ARE MOTIVATED TO JUMP INTO THIS BUSINESS EARNING MONEY ONLY.IN THIS REGARD I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT GAIL FROM VERY BEGINING AFTER FORMATION IN 1984 IS CONSTANTLY GROWING,CREATING WEALTH FOR THE NATION AND ALSO FULFILING SOCIAL NEEDS.GAIL IS HAVING ALL SORTS OF RESOURSES TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT WITIN THE SCHEDULE AND IN AFFICIENT MANNERS AND ALSO COUNTRY WILL BE SAFE DUE TO SECURITY REASON.IT IS VERY IRONIC THAT SOME PEOPLE SITTING ON HIGH CHAIRS ARE DISTORTING THE FACTS AND MANIPULATE TO GET THEIR OWN BENIFIT,WHICH IS NOT IN NATIONAL INTRESTS.ALSO OTHER PLAYERS IS TRYING TO GRASPS THIS PROJECT THROUGH ANY MEANS,BUT FACTS IS THAT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT IN TIMELY MANNER DUE TO LACK OF EXPOSURE AND RESOURCES.EVEN RIL HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO COMPLETE THE PIPELINE PROJECT WHICH THEY WERE DREAMING.HENCE GAIL INDIA IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

gail will be the right choice for the national gas grid
ANIL KUMAR RAJPOOT GAS GRID BY GAIL ONLY........ YES... 04 Aug 2006 01:45 PM
INDEED , GAIL IS ONLY PLAYER WHICH CAN DO THIS UPHILL TASK SUCCESSFULLY, HOWEVER TO MANY PRIVATE PLAYERS ARE IN LINE AND TRYING TO FORCE THE GOVT. TO DIVERT THE GAS GRID TO OTHERS. BUT I SAY THAT THIS IS NOT ONLY THE ISSUE OF BUISNESS BUT LINKED WITH SECURITY OF NATION. AND GAIL HAS RICH AND VAST EXPERIENCE IN THIS FIELD IN SPITE OF THAT IT'S A GOVT. PSU. GAIL IS RUNNING WITH CHANGING TIME AND PROVING THAT IT CAN DO... SO IN TODAYS , GAIL IS ONLY OPTION FOR NATIONAL GAS GRID..
gopinath yes 16 May 2006 06:13 AM
there is no monopoly. GAIL is a navaratna psu & its basic purpose is to help the country grow.so there is nothing wrong if its fully controlled by GAIL.

GAIL has not only been doing business since ages, but only this giabts has lots of needed dadabese to understand the present and future trends and indian requirement. and, the task forse behind it is no way less than any other world level counterparts, infact, it is indian human brains thar are working for lots of MNCs in india and abroads for more than a decade sooooo well, that we can not have slightest doubt about this petrogiant to take the responsibility. in my openion, monopoly be given to GAIL.
A K Srivastava Pipeline transportation business to be competitive 16 Nov 2005 11:27 PM
Giving monopoly right to a party is likely to distort especially gas market and very purpose of flow of gas from one part of India to another part may hamper. This may also lead to a situation when consumers may have to pay higher transportation charges.
mahesh chandra panda don't be baised 21 Oct 2005 05:47 AM
its the real time to give rights to the psu and other goverment owned industry to take part in the profit making rather than bearing the burden of the whole economy. think in the point of view of the GAIL why it is not becoming the real rolr model in the industry? private players are allowed to slash down the prices but the goverment one have to give them competition by bearing the burden of more than 240000 crores of subsidies. this can really be breakeven if the gail is allowed for the national grid so that he can easily control the demand and pricing of the gas sector.
Henry Dev Lall Rise and shine! Rise and Shine! 20 Oct 2005 11:46 AM
Hey, why don't you guys initiate another relevant issue? GAIL's monopoly is long gone-- truly buried and dead and for all you know, resurrected and buried again. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, pal! So, rise and shine, rise and shine. Aren't you guys supposed to be THE news site for the OIL & GAS Industry in the whole gig? So, get your asses moving and rack your rusted brains!
